The University of California, Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Director is responsible for the development and overall administration of the athletics program, which includes 20 sports teams (men's and women's basketball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, swimming, water polo, cross country/track and field, women's indoor track, baseball, softball, and men's golf) and holds two national championships. UC Santa Barbara is an NCAA Division I-AAA program and a member of the Big West Conference and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. (For more details see the website: http://ucsbgauchos.cstv.com.) The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics reports directly to the Chancellor and is responsible, in consultation with the Intercollegiate Athletics Policy Board (faculty, staff and student advisory committee to the Chancellor), for the formulation and implementation of all athletics policies including strategic planning, fundraising, and financial management of the athletics program, all in keeping with the rules and regulations promulgated by the NCAA, the Big West Conference, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, and the university. The Athletics Director has the responsibility to oversee all intercollegiate athletics personnel actions (hiring, salary increases, contracts, discipline and separations), consistent with established university policies and procedures. Qualifications include senior-level experience in budgetary and personnel oversight and management of a Division I athletics program (at least five years preferred); demonstrated fundraising prowess; a reputation for and record of personal and programmatic integrity; and a successful grasp of principles of equity and diversity in regard to coaches, staff and student-athletes. The university is seeking candidates who possess a demonstrated commitment to racial/ethnic and gender diversity. Experience in a research university is preferred, as well as familiarity with a campus environment that promotes for its student-athletes the highest academic standards combined with expectations for excellence in athletics. In this regard, the Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) Mission Statement includes the following note: "The University of California, Santa Barbara expects its ICA teams to strive for an excellence commensurate with the excellence achieved by its strongest academic departments. The candidate is expected to bring visionary leadership to the program and to display compelling interpersonal skills, in order to excel as a representative of the university and the athletics program in relationships with the broader university community (e.g., faculty, staff, students, and administration), the athletics community (e.g., alumni, donors and boosters), and the general Santa Barbara community. UC Santa Barbara is located in the oceanside community of Santa Barbara, California, population 93,000, and is one of the ten campuses of the University of California system. The student population is 20,000, and the campus offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degrees.
