Howard Gauthier recently completed his inaugural year as the California State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) athletics director. Gauthier has over 20 years experience from coast to coast in intercollegiate athletics, and was most recently the athletics director of Southwest Minnesota State.

During his two years at the Marshall, Minnesota campus, he initiated a membership drive for the Mustang Booster Club. Membership increased from around 90 members to over 400 from a town of about 15,000 residents. The club subsequently raised over $75,000 in scholarship dollars. His career also included a five-year stop as athletics director at Division I Idaho State. While at Idaho State, sponsorships and donations rose from $661,000 to over $1,100,000.

Gauthier served as an assistant basketball coach at Southern Illinois, Roanoke and Whitworth, while becoming a head coach at Eastern Oregon and Wartburg.

Born in Port Townsend, Washington, Gauthier received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Washington State, a master's degree in sports management from St. Thomas (Fla.), and a Ph. D. in education from Southern Illinois.

Gauthier and his wife Karen have a fourteen-year-old daughter, Ali, and reside in Marina.
