Player Profile

Position:
Director of Athletics

Institution:
Montana State University

As Peter Fields passes his fourth anniversary as Montana State's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, the signposts of the program's success and growth are everywhere. Most notably, leading the Athletics Department to its first Sterling Bank President's Cup accolade for being the top program in the Big Sky Conference for academic and athletic achievement in 2004-05.

The Bobcat men's athletic programs combined for the school's second Big Sky Conference Men's All-Sports Trophy during Fields' tenure this spring, and in 2004-05 the MSU men's and women's programs combined scored more points than all other Big Sky programs combined for the first time in school history.

The Big Sky Conference recognized Fields' standing among his peers a year ago, appointing him to represent the league on the NCAA Management Council. He also serves on several league committees.

Fields joined MSU after six years at the University of Missouri, including the last four as Associate AD. He directed Missouri's athletic business operations from 1996-2002, with oversight of the department's $28.7 million budget. Prior to that, Fields was Assistant AD for Finance at Toledo from 1988-96, and previously at Kent State from 1985-88. At Toledo, Fields supervised all fiscal operations of the athletic department, coordinated event management and other elements of the football and men's and women's basketball programs. At Kent State, he helped supervise men's basketball, and supervised the department's ticket, business and equipment operations.

Fields is a 1979 graduate of the University of Maine, Presque Isle, where he was a varsity wrestler. He served as assistant wrestling coach there in 1983-84, and received his master's degree from The United States Sports Academy in 1987.

Fields served as President of the College Athletic Business Management Association in 1999, and was named its 2004 Manager of the Year. He serves on the Montana Special Olympics statewide board and is a member of Sunrise Rotary, as well.

His wife Debbie is a nurse in the Livingston school system, and their daughter Briana finished her career as a Bobcat basketball player last spring. She is currently an assistant coach at Gannon University.
