As athletics director at Northwestern State (NSU) for 12 years, Greg Burke has steered NSU athletics to many of its greatest accomplishments while overseeing a program that has fielded championship caliber teams in nearly all of the school's NCAA Division I sports. There have been 22 Southland Conference championships; 16 teams in postseason play; 45 national award winners, and three Olympic competitors. Burke was tabbed as one of two Natchitoches Parish Cenla Newsmakers of 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper's editorial staff. In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America Football Foundation's Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director Award. He received the 2006 "Outstanding Alumni Award" from his alma mater, Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio, recognizing his community service and professional achievements. In June 2006, he was a featured speaker and panelist at the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors convention in New Orleans. Burke spoke on "Budgets at Non-BCS Schools" in a breakout session to members of CABMA at the NACDA convention. He took part in a panel discussion of "Fundraising from an Athletics Director's Perspective" speaking to the NAADD. He just completed one year of service on the now dissolved NCAA Division I Championship/Competition Cabinet and will begin a three-year term on the newly formed NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet. In addition, he attended his first meeting as a member of the prestigious NCAA Championships/Competition Cabinet, a 49-person panel which makes recommendations to the Executive Council of presidents on all the key issues facing Division I athletics. He previously served a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee (1999-2002). Burke has served as a site supervisor forFCS playoff games across the nation and he is regarded as one of the country's premiere advocates ofFCS football. Burke earned his undergraduate degree in 1978 from Mt. Union. He then went on to earn his master's degree from Kent State in 1986. He and his wife, Susu, a Natchitoches native, NSU graduate and teacher, have a 14-year-old daughter, Catherine. |
