Lee Reed is starting his sixth year as Director of Athletics at Cleveland State. He rejoined the CSU family in the summer of 2002 and was immediately charged with leading Viking athletics to national prominence. Reed's first three years at the helm were successful ones as Reed's accomplishments included a master plan for improvements to CSU's athletics facilities that led to a $2.2 renovation of Krenzler Field and additional plans that would affect all 17 sports including the addition of an on-campus baseball field, a new aquatics center that would feature a championship caliber diving well, and a varsity fieldhouse. Additionally, Reed increased private gifts to the athletics department by 27%; including the creation of the Avis Scholarship Fund, the first fully endowed scholarship for men's basketball. Reed also successfully guided the department through its 10-year NCAA certification process, resulting in the unconditional certification of the department in May, 2005. Reed represents the Horizon League on the NCAA Management Council, one of the most prestigious committees within the NCAA. The chairman of the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards committee, which is operated through NACDA, Reed also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. In March, 2005, Reed was honored for his accomplishments at CSU when he was listed as one of the 50 Most Powerful African-Americans in Sports by Black Enterprise magazine. Reed rejoined the Vikings after spending the previous seven years at Eastern Michigan University, the last four as Associate Athletics Director for Internal Affairs at Eastern Michigan. Reed joined the Eastern Michigan staff in 1995-96 as Director of Ticket Operations, Marketing and Promotions Assistant. He was responsible for the daily operation of the athletics ticket office, the development of marketing and ticket brochures and the hiring and supervision of event staff. After just one year, Reed was promoted to Executive Assistant to the President where he became responsible for the daily operations of the Office of the President. He served on the President's cabinet and had operational oversight for the office's $7 million budget. Reed maintained his ties to athletics, serving as the president's liaison to athletics on personnel, marketing and public relations issues. After almost two years in the president's office, Reed returned to the athletics department as Associate Athletics Director for Internal Affairs in January of 1998. A native of Cincinnati, Reed attended Cleveland State on a basketball scholarship. A four-year letterman, Reed played on teams that compiled a 61-47 mark, serving as team captain for the 1982-83 season. Reed coached basketball at the University of New Mexico from 1984-86 and returned to the university to earn his degree in university studies and psychology in 1992. He later received a master's degree in sports administration from UNM in 1994. Reed returned to the Cleveland area in January of 1995 when he was hired as an administrative assistant for the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, which is based in Westlake, OH. In his 15 months with NACDA, he worked with the Sears Director's Cup Program and the NACDA Foundation scholarships program. Reed and his wife, Katafa, have four children, sons Lee, Jr., Christian and Grant, and daughter Francys. The Reeds reside in Solon, Ohio. |
