UC-Davis Retakes the Lead for the Division II Sears Directors' Cup Standings

CLEVELAND - Three-time champion, University of California-Davis (1996, 1997, 2000), has retaken the lead in the Division II Sears Directors' Cup as the winter championship season comes to a close. UC-Davis holds a 10-point margin over the previous leader, Western State (Col.).

The Aggies placed fourth in women's indoor track and field and men's swimming, 10th in men's indoor track and field and 14th in women's swimming to post 481 points in the Sears Directors' Cup standings. The Sears Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.

Western State holds second place with 471 points. Rounding out the top five are North Dakota, third with 392 points; South Dakota State, fourth with 373.5 points; and UC-San Diego, fifth with 357 points.

This is the final set of winter standings and includes the sports of women's and men's basketball, fencing, women's and men's ice hockey, rifle, skiing, women's and men's swimming, women's and men's indoor track and field and men's wrestling. Winning national championships were Cal Poly Pomona, women's basketball; Kentucky Wesleyan, men's basketball; Minnesota-Duluth, women's ice hockey; Alaska-Fairbanks, rifle; Truman State (Mo.), women's swimming; California State-Bakersfield, men's swimming; St. Augustine's (N.C.), women's and men's indoor track and field; and North Dakota State, men's wrestling. The highest finish in fencing and skiing, National Collegiate Championships, was 10th place by Wayne State (Mich.) and eighth place by Northern Michigan, respectively.

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven for men and seven for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.

Final winter sports standings follow. Please note that standings published midseason are unofficial standings. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season. The codes are as follows: W - women; M - men; BB - basketball; IHoc - ice hockey; SW - swimming; T&F - track and field; and WR - wrestling.
