Scoring Update for Division II

Western State Maintains Slim Lead at the Conclusion of the Fall Division II Sears Directors' Cup Standings

December 21, 2000

CLEVELAND - With just a four-point margin, Western State College (Col.) closes out the fall season at the top of the Division II Sears Directors' Cup, presented by the nation's athletics directors.

Western State, which placed fifth in the standings last year, had been in the lead the entire year. The Mountaineers won national titles in both women's and men's cross country and placed 17th in women's volleyball to complete the fall season with 230 points in the Sears Directors' Cup standings. The Sears Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.

Reclaiming second place with 226 points is two-time champion (1996 and 1997), California-Davis. Rounding out the top five are Lock Haven (Penn), third with 202 points; Barry (Fla.), fourth with 195 points; and California-San Diego (UCSD), fifth with 190 points.

These are the final fall standings and include the sports of women and men's cross country, field hockey, football, women's and men's soccer, women's volleyball and men's water polo. In addition to Western State, winning the national championships were Lock Haven in field hockey; Delta State (Miss.) in football; UCSD in women's soccer; California State Dominguez Hills in men's soccer; and Hawaii Pacific in women's volleyball. The highest finish in men's water polo, a National Collegiate Championship, was second place by UCSD.

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven for men and seven for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.

Final fall sports standings follow. Please note that standings published midseason are unofficial standings. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the fall season. The codes are as follows: W - women; M - men; CC - cross country; FH - field hockey; FB - football; SOC - soccer; VB - volleyball; and WP - water polo.
