Stanford Increases Lead as the Division I Winter Sears Directors' Cup Standings Closes

Cleveland, Ohio - Seven-time Division I Sears Directors' Cup champion Stanford University has increased its lead to 399 points as the winter championship season comes to a close. The Sears Directors' Cup is presented by the nation's athletics directors.

Stanford placed second in men's swimming; third in women's swimming; fifth in women's indoor track and field; sixth in fencing, women and men's gymnastics; ninth in women's basketball; 17th in men's basketball; 35th in men's indoor track and field; and 50th in men's wrestling to post 1,116.5 points. The inaugural winner, North Carolina, follows with 717.5 points. The Sears Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.

Minnesota is in third with 659.5 points; followed by Michigan, in fourth with 609 points; and, Florida in fifth with 601 points.

This is the final winter standings and includes the sports of women's and men's basketball, swimming gymnastics, ice hockey and indoor track and field, along with men's wrestling and fencing, rifle and skiing. Winning national championships were Connecticut in women's basketball; Maryland in men's basketball; Alabama in women's gymnastics; Oklahoma in men's gymnastics; Minnesota in men's ice hockey and men's wrestling; Auburn in women's swimming; Texas in men's swimming; Louisiana State in women's indoor track and field; Tennessee in men's indoor track and field; Penn State in fencing; and Denver in skiing. The highest Division I finish in the national collegiate sports were Brown, second in women's ice hockey; and Kentucky, second in rifle.

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points. Winter standings to date follows. Please note that standings published midseason are unofficial standings. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season. Codes are as follows: W - women; M - men; BB - basketball; Hoc - hockey; SW - swimming; T&F - track and field; and WR - wrestling.
