Sears Directors' Cup
Scoring Update for Division I Stanford and Florida Sit Atop the Division I Sears Directors' Cup StandingsAs of January 8, 1999 Cleveland, Ohio - Stanford University, four-time winners of the Division I Sears Directors' Cup, presented by the nation's athletics directors, continues to hold its lead as the fall season comes to a close in the 1998-99 race. However, the University of Florida has secured the second spot, narrowing the gap to 110 points. Stanford scored in six of the eight sports, earning the runner-up positions in men's cross country, soccer and water polo; placing third in women's cross country; ninth in women's volleyball; and 33rd in women's soccer. The Cardinal end the fall campaign with 310 points. The Sears Directors' Cup is administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co. Moving into the second spot with 200 points is Florida, with its points earned from its national title in women's soccer, third place finish in women's volleyball, sixth place showing in football; and 22nd place in women's cross country. Rounding out the top five are Penn State, third with 180 points; Arkansas, fourth with 170 points; and Brigham Young, Southern California and Wisconsin, tied for fifth with 150 points. These are the final fall standings and include the sports of women and men's cross country, field hockey, football, women and men's soccer, women's volleyball and men's water polo. Winning national championships in these sports were Villanova in women's cross country; Arkansas in men's cross country; Old Dominion in field hockey; Tennessee in I-A football; Massachusetts in I-AA football; Florida in women's soccer; Indiana in men's soccer; Long Beach State in women's volleyball and Southern California in men's water polo. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points. There are four Sears Directors' Cup Awards, one to honor the institution with the best all-around athletics program in each of the NCAA's Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA. It is the first-ever cross-sectional all-sports national recognition award for both men and women. The winner of the award receives a trophy designed by Waterford Crystal, which tours the country, appearing at major men and women's events throughout the year.
